Is this a SpyBot or a Vista Issue?

Everything has been just fine until today…

Just updated Vista to SP1 yesterday.

Today, I updated Spybot (1.5.2), then when I went to "Immunize" I got the following response:

"You are missing administrator rights to preform this action.

If you need to do this, please run this application elevated as an administor."

And yes, it won’t "Immunize" everything:

"Unprotected: 647

Protected: 35982

Total: 36629"

This machine only has 1 user account (mine), and of course it is an Administrator account.

So… now what?

I have no problem running Spybot on my various XP computers.

This is part of Vista’s UAC (User Account Access).

To run Spybot with Admin rights rt click the Spybot Icon and chose "Run as Administrator"

Now it should do it.

Well… THAT was easy!

All I knew is that I didn’t have that problem until today. I have to assume that some setting was changed automatically when I installed SP1 because I didn’t change anything… at least not knowingly. Zone Alarm keeps yelling at me know and I’m trying to figure out what I should OK and what I should block.

I really am trying to "like" Vista ( I needed it for ONE particular program I have…) but I get along with XP just fine. I think a few years ago I said the same thing as I transfered from Win 98…

Anyway… all is now well and working. THANKS!!!

I thought I was done with this issue, but no…….

Q1 - Did I mess up something (again)…

OR

Do I have to do the "Administrator" thing EVERY time I want to run SpyBot? I’ve been fighting with other programs (and/or issues) with my Vista machine so now I don’t know what’s going on…….

Oh, wait… That’s what the TweakUAC thing will do for me, right? Is that something I REALLY want to do? Pros & Cons, please……

Q2 - When did I become a "Senior Member" on this board? Not that I’m complaining, of course. Especially if it means I can now order off the "Seniors Menu" at restaurants.

That is what TweakUAC is for, if you choose Quite Mode you have UAC but without the mouthy anoyances!

TweakUAC can turn off or on UAC, as you can anyway in Users accounts. But Quite mode keeps it on while zipping it’s lips!

Google TweakUAC and read about it!

Cool…. I’ll look into it a little later.

Meanwhile, I need to start a thread over in the Vista area.

My Vista machine is now constantly "listening" to the ‘net. At least that is what I think it’s doing, according to ZoneAlarm. It didn’t do that until I did (was "forced") the multiple updates (as in multiple sessions of multiple files) to bring it up to SP1………..

I really am trying to like Vista….

New issue related (I’m sure) to Vista or ZoneAlarm or that huge security mess…

I’m trying to install the latest ZoneAlarm on my Vista computer. It’s doing that "You must be an Administrator" thing. I do the right click and "Run as administrator" thing….

It STILL says I must be an Administrator.

So… given all the carp (purposfully spelled wrong here) on the internet, will (should) TweakUAC help me even with these current "issues"?

Also - It’s doing that blasted constant "listening" - AGAIN - and I can’t make it stop this time….

AND it automatically installed that stupid update that messed up ZoneAlarm while my back was turned (fighting other issues on my main XP machine and a printer…..)… so if I can’t get the new ZoneAlarm installed it will become a paperweight and I’m just ticked off enough with Microsoft and Vista and the morons screwing up the Internet right now that I just MIGHT leave it as a paperweight.

Somebody PLEASE talk me off this ledge!

ZoneAlarm SAYS Vista is not affected by this latest Windows Update problem… Is this true (he asks, backing just slightly away from the edge…)

UPDATE (for those keeping score at home…):

Apparently ZoneAlarm & Windows ARE just fine playing together in the Vista sandbox. So I am coming back in off the ledge. :-)

The Vista computer rebooted itself (while I was away, with my head in the fridge…) and seems just fine. Except for the constant listening thing………….
